News - The Modern Warfare Story So Far (warzone 2019 & Warzone 2 Story Recap)
Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 is set to release here soon, and with this comes early access to the campaign. Cod campaigns are traditionally the most memorable and identifiable element of a given game's theme; they're the appetizer. Before the multiplayer main course in 2019, Infinity Wars set out to reboot the Modern Warfare franchise, which in turn also meant the campaign.
Now you can't just retell an already Flawless story, but what Infinity War does with this reboot is actually quite impressive. Both Modern Warfare 19 and Modern Warfare 2 have things for newcomers and longtime fans. I'm going to break down both campaigns for you in order to better prepare you for the launch of Modern Warfare 3.
Now let's break down the entire timeline for the rebooted Modern Warfare franchise. The game starts in a town you may know as Verdansk in 2019, when a crew of CIA operatives stops a chemical weapon shipment from being sent to Ukraine. Ukraine is also where most of the action throughout the game takes place.
Upon finding the gas, things go south incredibly fast. As most things go in action sequences, hostiles take out the entire American team except for one man. Alex Keller: Why do they keep him alive? You know, for plot purposes, his Handler CIA station Chief Kate Lwell isn't pleased and decides to call on the assistance of everyone's favorite British man, SAS.
Captain John Price: Why does she call on Price? Well, she needs his help in recovering the chemical, as well as help with deescalation of their current situation with Russia. The next day we're whisked away to Picadilly Circus in London, and suddenly terrorist organization ELC Catala sends in suicide bombers, making Picadilly Circus significantly more chaotic than it already is day-to-day.
Gaz Garrick, along with a unit of Metro Metropolitan Police Stfo officers, do their best to take hold of the situation until Price is able to come and help. This is one of the missions wherein it feels like Infinity Ward actually delivered on the intensity and grittiness of Price, and G finds a hostage and attempts to save them from the bomb strapped to their chest.
The rescuers realize it may be too late to get it off, so Price makes the split-second decision to dump the guy over the railing in order to save himself. Gaz and others, what are you doing? no, while pretty messed up, it's a solid bit of storytelling that really engages the player with the set of stakes that aren't normally felt in Call of Duty campaigns.
Picadilly is left looking like a war zone. Alex is sent to Urzikstan to meet an old contact about prices. The ekan. Liberation Force leader Farah Kim Alex and Farah reach a deal; she'll help in the search for the stolen chemicals if Alex will assist her in her resistance against the Russian occupier of her home.
The occupiers are led by Roman Barov. Alex holds up his end of the bargain and assists in standing up the regimen that has been in the country for years. SAS forces led by Price and Gaz Raiden in El Catala occupied a townhouse in London. This is a great This is a great mission. I remember this mission.
This mission is also a standout moment for Modern Warfare 2019, as the raid itself is taking place really slowly and being played out in the most militaristic fashion possible. While most Call of Duty missions require a running gun, this one forces you to take it down a notch, making for a good break in the otherwise fast-paced game.
Upon raiding the townhouse, the crew finds information about the El Catala leader, Omar the Wolf Sulon. Alex, accompanied by Sergeant Marcus Griggs, and the demon dogs raid Raaza Hospital in Urzikstan and capture the wolf. So I wasn't supposed to do that. Garrick Alex and Far all work together in order to ensure the wolf doesn't get set free, but ultimately, they fail.
Phah then plans an ambush on the wolf's men along the so-called highway of death in Zakhan. This falls flat as Barov soldiers arrive and attack both the Ulf and the El Catala. Pharaoh's brother Hadir ends up explaining how he's the one responsible for stealing the chemical shipment back in Verdansk, in a desperate attempt to scare off the Russians.
Hadir sets off chemicals, killing Baral's men along with El Catala militants. Hadir's reasoning behind using the gas slowly unfolds before the player in 1999. Bov's invasion of Ukraine left Farah and Hadir orphaned. The two attempted to flee the country but were quickly imprisoned by Barov for the next 10 years.
During that time, Phah took control of the Ulf and planned a breakout from Bov's prison for Price's health. In the present day, Hadir has joined forces with El Catala, forcing Farah and Price to act fast. They infiltrate the wolf's secret base and finally kill him, but are not able to locate Hader due to the gas still being nowhere to be found.
The United States government decides to declare Farah's Army a terrorist threat. This drastic action is enough to make Alex defect from the CIA and join up with the Ulf. After gaining some intelligence on Hadir and a potential attack, he's orchestrating Price, and Garrick travels to St. Petersburg to meet up with Price's old contact Nikolai.
They intercept an El Catalunya meeting and apprehend the butcher. After a refusal to comply, Price threatens to kill the butcher's family. He folds and reveals that Hader plans to attack Barov at the estate in Malova. The game then gives the player, Gaz, the option to kill the butcher or leave him for the police at the estate price and gas.
Save Bov's family and capture Hadir; this gets them the location of Bov's gas factory in Borjomi. Well returns to the story and tells Price that Russia has made demands that Hader be handed over to them, leaving Price trapped without any options. Submits on the condition that they retain intelligence on the gas factory price.
Gaz Alex and Farah plan an attack on the factory because, most likely, it'll be viewed as an El Catala attack rather than an Ulf Force attack. The final act kicks off in spectacular fashion. They raided the factory and set up explosives. The detonator gets damaged in the scuffle, and Alex volunteers to blow them up manually, sacrificing himself.
Barov attempts to escape in a helicopter, but Farah kills him. The squad escapes as a factory gets destroyed, with Barov dead and disowned by the Russian government. Price meets with Lwell to request the creation of a familiar group. Call of Duty fans know all too well that in Task Force 141, the recruits in question are none other than Gaz Soap and Ghost; their mission is to hunt down Victor Sakab.
